Google-Backed Aura Glasses Launch at $1,099, $200 Under Meta

XREAL launched the XREAL AURA on 28 October 2026, calling it “the world’s first wired XR glasses powered by Android XR,” developed with Google and Qualcomm. Its release says the 12GB + 256GB model costs $1,099 and the 16GB + 512GB model $1,299 under a “surprise limited time offer”, with shipping expected to begin in mid-November.

Meta says its own VR Glasses, which The Verge reported compete with Aura, will be available in Spring 2027 for $1,299.99. By our arithmetic the cheaper Aura costs $200.99 less, about 15% below Meta’s price, and reaches buyers months earlier.

Business Pill · DISTRIBUTION ADVANTAGE

An evergreen Business Engineer explainer on distribution advantage: reach decides who gets tried. It explains the general idea only and is not about Google, Xreal or Meta.

The key insight: As we read it, the news is the price: Aura’s base model came down $180 before shipping began, to sit $200.99 under the price Meta has set for its VR Glasses, by our arithmetic.

What Google and Xreal Launched

  • Glasses with a puck. The release describes transparent optical see-through lenses, a split-compute design with the processor and battery in a compact puck, glasses under 95 grams, powered by Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon Reality Elite Platform.
  • Android apps and Gemini. The release says users get Google Play apps and games on day one and over 150 made-for-XR experiences. Google’s post cites a 70-degree field of view and says Gemini on Android XR “understands what you’re seeing and doing, both in the real world and on your screens.”
  • A screen for other devices. The release says Wired Mirroring lets users plug a computer or handheld gaming console into Aura over USB-C and turn it into a large private window.
  • Where to buy. Google’s post says orders open today in the U.S., Canada and Korea, and on November 2 in Japan.

US starting prices: Apple Vision Pro from $3,699 (Apple Store, read 28 Oct 2026), Meta VR Glasses $1,299.99 for Spring 2027 (Meta, Connect 2026), Xreal Aura $1,099 under XREAL’s 28 Oct limited-time offer. The $200.99 gap is our arithmetic.

The Price Against Meta and Apple

Meta’s Connect 2026 post says its VR Glasses “will be available in Spring 2027 for $1,299.99 USD” and weigh about 100 grams, with the battery and processors in a puck. Apple’s US store lists Apple Vision Pro from $3,699.

Our arithmetic on those list prices: the $1,099 Aura is $200.99 below Meta’s VR Glasses, a gap of about 15%. The $1,299 Aura is 99 cents below Meta’s price. One Apple Vision Pro costs about 3.4 times the $1,099 Aura, a difference of $2,600.

The two products are not the same. The Verge’s 7 October comparison said Aura uses transparent lenses, while Meta’s VR Glasses use passthrough vision and offer more immersion, and that Meta’s glasses also have eye tracking.

Xreal Aura US prices per configuration: the early pre-order prices The Verge reported on 7 October 2026 ($1,279 and $1,499) against XREAL’s 28 October launch offer ($1,099 and $1,299).

The Verge reported on 7 October that Xreal had opened Aura pre-orders starting at $1,279, $20 less than the Meta VR Glasses, with the 16GB / 512GB model at $1,499. On 28 October The Verge’s Sean Hollister wrote that the $1,099 price runs through the end of the year, and asked: “In this economy, how often does a product get less expensive before its debut?”

By our arithmetic the cut is $180 on the base model, about 14%, and $200 on the 16GB model. Hollister gave his own reading: “I expect that’s because at $1,279, they were going head to head with Meta’s VR Glasses”. The Verge reports that Xreal GM and spokesperson Ralph Jodice said buyers who pre-ordered at the original price will be refunded the difference automatically.

Connecting the Coverage

Hollister’s question about prices lands in a year when devices have gone the other way: our device prices piece covered Amazon and Apple price rises of up to 60% this year, with memory costs cited. Aura’s release lists 12GB and 16GB of memory for its two models.

We covered Meta’s VR Glasses when they were announced in our Meta Connect 2026 piece. Gemini is the AI layer on Aura; Alphabet reported its quarterly results on the same day, covered in our Google Cloud earnings piece.

The Structural Read

As we read it, the comparison is between a device XREAL expects to start shipping in mid-November and one Meta says arrives in Spring 2027.

The Verge reported that the products differ: Aura has transparent lenses, while Meta’s VR Glasses use passthrough vision and have eye tracking.

Gemini is the AI layer on Aura: Google’s post says it understands what users see and do, both in the real world and on their screens.

Chi Xu, co-founder and CEO of XREAL, in the 28 October release

“With transparent lenses, a category-leading lightweight design, Gemini by your side, and access to the Android ecosystem from day-one, the promise of XR is more approachable than ever”

Three Implications

FOR GOOGLE Google’s post says Android XR brings Gemini and apps from Google Play, including over 150 apps made for XR, to Aura.

FOR META Meta’s post sets its VR Glasses at $1,299.99 for Spring 2027; The Verge reported Xreal’s earlier $1,279 pre-order price sat $20 below it.

FOR BUYERS XREAL calls the $1,099 and $1,299 prices a limited-time offer; The Verge says they run through the end of the year, and that pre-order buyers get the difference refunded.

The Business Engineer Lens

This story maps onto the Business Engineer framework The Open vs Closed Meta-Framework.

The framework states the pattern as “Close the SCARCE layer (keep proprietary) + Open the ABUNDANT layer (commoditize)”, and warns that timing, execution and competitive dynamics decide whether the strategy works.

On Aura, the release says XREAL built the glasses with Google’s Android XR and Qualcomm’s chip, with Gemini from Google; The Verge says each device’s puck runs either Meta’s Horizon OS or Android XR. The framework was published in March 2026 and does not discuss Aura or Meta’s VR Glasses.

What Is Not Established

The release calls the prices a limited-time offer and does not give the price after it ends; The Verge reports it runs through the end of the year. Neither Google nor Xreal has given pre-order or sales numbers, or said how they share revenue from the device. Meta has not, in anything we read, responded to Aura’s price. We did not contact the companies.

This week’s issue: the AI build is not short of demand for its parts. It is short of cheap money, and its end revenue rests on a narrow base of large, often venture-funded buyers.

The Bottom Line

Google and Xreal’s Aura, the first wired glasses running Android XR, is on sale from $1,099, down from the $1,279 pre-order price The Verge reported. That is $200.99 below the $1,299.99 Meta has set for its VR Glasses due in Spring 2027, by our arithmetic, and Aura is expected to begin shipping in mid-November.

A note on sourcing. Device details and launch prices come from XREAL’s 28 October 2026 release and Google’s blog post, read in full; pre-order prices from The Verge. Meta’s price is from its Connect 2026 post and Apple’s from its US store, read on 28 October. Price gaps and ratios are our arithmetic on those list prices.
