Global Chip Sales Pass $1 Trillion Through August, SIA Says

The Semiconductor Industry Association said on 5 October 2026 that global semiconductor sales were $159.7 billion in August 2026, up 8% from July’s $147.9 billion and 144.3% more than the $65.4 billion of August 2025. SIA says the monthly figures are compiled by World Semiconductor Trade Statistics (WSTS) and represent a three-month moving average.

SIA president and CEO Michael Robbins said that “Annual global semiconductor sales have already surpassed $1 trillion through August, reaching this major milestone for the first time ever.”

What SIA Reported

Robbins said that “The global semiconductor market grew for the 18 th consecutive month in August, with sales into the Americas, the Asia Pacific, and China driving strong and sustained year-to-year growth.”

He added: “With sales projected to exceed $1.6 trillion in 2026, the semiconductor industry is entering an exciting new era of growth and innovation.” The release does not say who made that projection.

Business Pill · A SANITY CHECK

A one-minute explainer of a sanity check: taking the numbers you were given and doing the sum yourself. It teaches the general idea only and says nothing about any company in this story.

The key insight: As we read it, the 144.3% compares two three-month averages a year apart, so it sets the level of sales now against a much lower base in mid-2025. The same SIA table gives a shorter comparison: sales for June, July and August were 27.2% above those for March, April and May.

Where the Growth Came From

SIA’s August table gives sales by region in billions of dollars. Year to year, the Americas rose from $21.02 billion to $59.04 billion (180.9%), Asia Pacific/All Other from $18.47 billion to $44.88 billion (143.0%), China from $17.69 billion to $40.91 billion (131.3%), Europe from $4.45 billion to $8.84 billion (98.5%) and Japan from $3.74 billion to $6.08 billion (62.3%).

Month to month, the release says sales increased in Asia Pacific/All Other (9.1%), Japan (8.5%), the Americas (8.2%), Europe (7.5%) and China (6.6%).

By our arithmetic, the five regional figures for August add up to $159.75 billion, against the table’s stated total of $159.74 billion; the difference is rounding. The Americas account for about 37% of the August total.

How the Figures Are Built

Each monthly figure is a three-month moving average, so August’s $159.74 billion is the average for June, July and August. The table also compares that average with March, April and May, when it was $125.59 billion, an increase of 27.2%.

The release does not give a year-to-date dollar total beyond saying sales have surpassed $1 trillion through August, and it gives no split by product, such as memory or logic. Its full WSTS data is sold as a subscription package.

A Different Figure in Circulation

A BusinessToday Malaysia headline on 11 October 2026 put sales for the first eight months at $957 billion, up 103%. Neither figure appears in the SIA release or in SIA’s August table, which we read on 11 October; we could not read that article’s text and do not use its numbers.

The Structural Read

SIA’s release names regions, not products, as the drivers of growth. Its table shows the Americas rising most, by 180.9% to $59.04 billion, and Japan least, by 62.3% to $6.08 billion.

As we read it, the two comparisons in the table answer different questions. The year-to-year figure says how far sales have come in twelve months; the comparison of the latest three months with the three before says how they moved within 2026.

Robbins said the market grew for the 18th consecutive month in August. The release gives the milestone of $1 trillion through August without a precise year-to-date dollar total.

Three Implications

THE AMERICAS SIA’s table shows the Americas at $59.04 billion in August 2026, up 180.9% from $21.02 billion a year earlier, the largest of the five regions.

CHINA China rose 131.3% year to year to $40.91 billion, the release says, but had the smallest month-to-month increase of the five regions, 6.6%.

EUROPE AND JAPAN Europe rose 98.5% to $8.84 billion and Japan 62.3% to $6.08 billion; together they were under a tenth of the August total by our arithmetic.

The Business Engineer Lens

This story maps onto the Business Engineer framework The AI Capex Map & The State of AI Hyperscalers.

The analysis puts it this way: “the capex race is no longer a corporate spending cycle. It is a sovereign-scale financing problem dressed in tech-company clothing — and the financial architecture is starting to invert.”

As we read it, SIA’s monthly figures are one place where that spending shows up as revenue for chipmakers. The release itself does not tie the growth to AI or to any buyer, so the link is our reading, not SIA’s.

What Is Not Established

The SIA release does not attribute the growth to artificial intelligence or to any product category; Robbins names regions, not products. It does not say how much of the year-on-year rise reflects prices rather than unit volumes.

The release also does not say who projects sales above $1.6 trillion for 2026.

The Bottom Line

SIA says global chip sales reached $159.7 billion in August 2026 on a three-month moving average, 144.3% above a year earlier, and that sales for the year have already surpassed $1 trillion through August. The Americas rose most, by 180.9%, and Japan least, by 62.3%.

A note on sourcing. We read the Semiconductor Industry Association’s release of 5 October 2026 and its August 2026 table and chart, which use WSTS data, on 11 October 2026. Every figure is SIA’s unless labelled as our arithmetic. A BusinessToday Malaysia headline with different figures was noted but not used as a source.
