Taiwan’s exports hit a monthly record of US$87.22 billion in September 2026, up 60.9 percent from a year earlier, according to preliminary customs statistics from the Ministry of Finance reported by Taiwan’s Central News Agency on 8 October 2026. It was the 35th consecutive month of year-on-year growth.
The September figure surpassed the previous monthly record of US$82.4 billion set in August, CNA reports. Information, communication and audio-video products reached US$39.13 billion, roughly double the level a year earlier, and electronic components rose 45.3 percent to US$31.13 billion.
Business Pill · CONCENTRATION
A one-minute explainer of concentration: how much of a total comes from its largest few parts. It teaches the general idea only and says nothing about any country or company in this story.
The key insight: As we read it, the record is concentrated in two product groups. Information, communication and audio-video products and electronic components together came to about US$70.3 billion, roughly 81% of September exports on our arithmetic.
What Drove It
MOF statistics chief Beatrice Tsai attributed the streak to four factors, according to CNA: robust global investment in technological innovation and AI, rising demand for advanced electronic components driven by AI applications, tight capacity in the electronics supply chain that kept export prices high, and inventory buildup ahead of new mobile devices and consumer electronics.
Tsai said AI-related demand has also helped traditional industries: non-electronic and non-ICT products rose 25.4 percent in September, and electrical machinery exports rose 29.8 percent, supported by data center construction, power grid upgrades and equipment replacement.
On our arithmetic, the two main categories, US$39.13 billion and US$31.13 billion, together account for about 81% of September exports.

The Quarter and the Year
Imports rose 51.7 percent to a record US$63.59 billion, leaving a monthly trade surplus of US$23.63 billion, up 92.2 percent, CNA reports.
Third-quarter exports totaled US$244.92 billion, up 44.6 percent, and exports for the first nine months of 2026 climbed 46.2 percent to US$661.55 billion, according to the same report.
Tsai forecast October exports of US$85.2 billion to US$87.7 billion, up 40 to 44 percent, and said fourth-quarter exports are highly likely to push annual exports above US$900 billion.
The Structural Read
The streak itself is a record. CNA reports that 35 consecutive months of year-on-year growth breaks the previous record of 34 months, from November 1985 to August 1988.
The increase was large in absolute terms. September exports rose by US$33 billion from a year earlier, according to the same report.
Neither leading category set its own record. Tsai said both posted their second-highest monthly export values on record.

The Business Engineer Lens
This story maps onto the Business Engineer framework The AI Capex Map.
The framework’s starting point describes 2026 spending by the largest technology groups as “the largest single-year concentrated infrastructure cycle in the history of technology.”
As we read it, Taiwan’s export figures show where part of that spending lands as shipments. The ministry’s categories do not separate AI products from other electronics, so the link rests on Tsai’s explanation, not on a figure in the data.
