Anthropic said on 30 October that it is “removing the 5-hour limit for verified Ultra accounts, starting today with most existing subscribers”. Ultra is the new name of the Max 20x plan, and its price stays at $200 a month. “Weekly limits remain unchanged”, the company’s post on X says.
By our arithmetic from Anthropic’s pricing page, all three paid plans charge the same $20 for each week of Pro-level usage: $20 for Pro, $100 for 5x on Max and $200 for 10x on Ultra.

Business Pill · RATE LIMITS
A short Business Engineer explainer on rate limits: why an AI product caps how much each user can do in a period. It teaches the general idea only and does not discuss Anthropic’s plan change.
The key insight: Anthropic renamed Max 20x as Ultra, kept it at $200 a month and said it is removing the 5-hour limit for verified Ultra accounts with weekly limits unchanged; by our arithmetic from its pricing page, Pro, Max and Ultra each charge $20 per Pro-week of usage.
What Anthropic Announced
The post lists two renames: “Max 5x → Max” and “Max 20x → Ultra”. It adds: “Max is still $100/month, and Ultra is still $200. If you’re a subscriber, there’s nothing you need to do.”
On the limit, it says: “Newer accounts keep a temporary limit until they’re verified, which helps us prevent fraud and abuse. You’ll get an email when it’s removed.” The post was published at 17:29 UTC on 30 October.

What Was Posted on X
TestingCatalog posted that Claude’s Max 20x plan is now named Claude Ultra and no longer has 5-hour usage limits, and that the Max 5x plan is now simply named Claude Max; the post closes by asking whether ‘Mega’ tiers come next.
Adam Holter posted that although Claude plans offer more API-equivalent usage, people do not use significantly more of it on Claude than on Codex, possibly because they max out Claude plans less; he wonders whether that is related to the 5-hour limit, the limit this piece covers Anthropic removing for verified Ultra accounts.
What the Pricing Page Now Lists
Anthropic’s pricing page, read at about 17:41 UTC, lists Max at $100 with “5x Pro usage every 5 hours and every week”. It lists Ultra at $200 with “No 5-hour limit” and “10x Pro usage every week”.
A footnote says “No 5-hour limit for verified accounts”. The page lists monthly API credits of $100 on Max and “$200 a month in API credits, up from $100 on Max” on Ultra. Pro is $20 if billed monthly, or $17 a month billed annually.
A Wayback Machine copy of the page from 13:11 UTC the same day showed a single Max plan “From $100” with the line “Choose 5x or 20x more usage than Pro”. That copy said every plan has limits that “reset on a rolling five-hour session window, and paid plans add weekly limits on top”.
The Number We Computed
Dividing each plan’s monthly price by its weekly multiple of Pro gives $20 per Pro-week on all three: $20 divided by 1, $100 divided by 5 and $200 divided by 10. This is our arithmetic from the figures on the page.
On those figures, the extra $100 for Ultra over Max buys twice the weekly usage, the removal of the 5-hour limit for verified accounts and $100 more in monthly API credits. Over a year, Ultra costs $2,400 at the listed price, by our arithmetic.
Where It Fits
On 23 October we reported that SemiAnalysis said Anthropic appeared to be A/B testing Max 20x limits. On two accounts it measured, one got a 19% larger five-hour window and a 20% smaller weekly budget, according to its chart. Those were SemiAnalysis’s measurements, not an Anthropic announcement.
Earlier this month we covered how Amp opened its Claude Code mode to Claude Pro and Max plans, letting developers use the subscription inside another company’s coding agent.
The Structural Read
As we read the pricing page, the weekly multiple now sets the price on every paid plan at the same $20 per Pro-week, by our arithmetic, so the difference between Max and Ultra sits in the 5-hour limit and the API credit, not in the price of a week of usage.
As we read the post, verification is the gate on the new term: Anthropic says newer accounts keep a temporary limit until they are verified, which it says helps prevent fraud and abuse.
As we read our earlier coverage, the 5-hour window and the weekly budget are two separate limits: SemiAnalysis said on 22 October that it measured Max 20x accounts trading one against the other, and Anthropic now says it is removing the first on Ultra for verified accounts while keeping the second.
Anthropic (@claudeai) on X, 30 Oct 2026
“We’re also removing the 5-hour limit for verified Ultra accounts, starting today with most existing subscribers.”
Three Implications
FOR ULTRA SUBSCRIBERS Anthropic says most existing subscribers get the change starting today and that newer accounts get an email when the temporary limit is removed.
FOR MAX SUBSCRIBERS The pricing page lists Max at $100 with 5x Pro usage every 5 hours and every week, so the 5-hour limit still applies there.
FOR BUYERS COMPARING PLANS On the page, Ultra adds no 5-hour limit for verified accounts and $200 a month in API credits, up from $100 on Max, for $100 more a month.
The Business Engineer Lens
This story maps onto the Business Engineer framework The Subsidized AGI Economy.
The framework puts it this way: “The subscription is not one product. It is three assets bundled at a single price.”
As we read it, Anthropic’s change moves one limit inside that bundle while keeping the price and the weekly budget. The framework was published in June 2026 and does not discuss the Ultra rename or the 5-hour limit change.
What Is Not Established
Anthropic’s post and page do not say how many Ultra subscribers are already verified or how long newer accounts wait; its Help Center now describes how verification works (see the update below). None of the Anthropic pages we read explains how the old “20x” in the plan name relates to the “10x Pro usage every week” now listed for Ultra. The company says weekly limits are unchanged.
What happened next (30 Oct): what the Help Center says. Anthropic’s Help Center article “What is the Ultra plan?”, updated on 30 October, says under “What changed from Max 20x?” that “The Max 20x plan is now called the Ultra plan” and that “Ultra includes 10 times the Pro plan’s usage every week and has no five-hour limit, for verified accounts.” On verification it says Anthropic will “automatically verify Ultra accounts using factors like your account and payment history”, and that if you don’t see a Current session bar under Settings > Usage, your account is verified. Read together with Anthropic’s X post that “Weekly limits remain unchanged”, that implies the old Max 20x weekly allowance was also 10 times Pro (our reading of the two statements). Two posters on X went further: Hesamation wrote that “the old ’20x’ on Max 20x was actually for the 5-hour usage window, NOT the weekly usage”, and TestingCatalog listed Max 20x as “5-hour session allowance – 20x Pro” and “Weekly allowance – 10x Pro”. The Anthropic pages we read on 30 October (the Ultra and Max Help Center articles and the pricing page) do not state a per-session figure for the old plan, so that part is their account.
TestingCatalog’s post on X, above, sets out the old and new allowances side by side; it had about 1,550 views when we read it on 30 October.
Hesamation’s post on X, above, quote-posts Anthropic’s announcement and says the old “20x” applied to the 5-hour window.
The Bottom Line
Anthropic renamed Max 20x as Ultra, kept it at $200 a month and said it is removing the 5-hour limit for verified Ultra accounts while keeping weekly limits as they were. On its pricing page, each paid plan works out to $20 per Pro-week of usage, by our arithmetic.
