Claude Opus 5.5 Fast Mode Leaves Preview at $8/$40 per MTok

“Fast mode is out of research preview for Claude Opus 5.5, and you no longer need to request access,” Anthropic said in its Claude Platform release notes dated 15 October 2026. Requests to the model no longer need the fast-mode-2026-02-01 beta header.

Anthropic’s docs list fast mode for Claude Opus 5.5 at $8 per million input tokens and $40 per million output tokens, against $4 and $20 at standard speed, for “up to 2.5x higher output tokens per second” from the same model.

Business Pill · COST PER TASK

A one-minute explainer of cost per task: pricing the job rather than the word. It teaches the general idea only and says nothing about any company in this story.

The key insight: As we read it, Anthropic is selling the same Claude Opus 5.5 at two speeds: its docs list fast mode at $8 and $40 per million input and output tokens against $4 and $20 at standard speed, for up to 2.5x higher output tokens per second, and from 15 October 2026 that faster tier needs no access request in the Start, Build and Scale usage tiers.

The Money Mechanism

Anthropic’s pricing page lists Claude Opus 5.5 at $4 per million input tokens and $20 per million output tokens. Its fast mode table lists Claude Opus 5.5 at $8 and $40. By our arithmetic, fast mode is twice the standard rate on both input and output.

“Fast mode is priced at a multiplier on standard rates across the full context window, including requests over 200k input tokens,” the fast mode page says. Prompt caching multipliers and data residency multipliers apply on top of fast mode pricing.

The same table lists fast mode for Claude Opus 5 and Claude Opus 4.8 at $10 and $50 per million tokens, so Opus 5.5’s fast mode is listed below fast mode on those two models. The pricing page lists Claude Fable 5.1 at $10 and $50 at standard speed.

The 15 October note is about access and rate limits. Anthropic launched Opus 5.5 on 22 September 2026 at “$4 / $20 USD per MTok”, and its release note that day said “Fast mode (research preview) is available for Claude Opus 5.5 on the Claude API.”

What Was Posted on X

Anthropic’s Claude Devs account says Claude Code now gzips the conversation it sends on every turn so it reaches the model faster, and that cloud sessions start up as soon as you start typing.

Chubby (@kimmonismus) says Anthropic ships updates at a pace that rivals OpenAI’s 28 days of Codex updates without announcing them, and that he has seen no decline in Opus 5.5’s quality. That is his view.

What Changed on 15 October

Requests that still send the beta header keep working, Anthropic says. “Claude Opus 5.5 now has a default fast mode rate limit in the Start, Build, and Scale usage tiers.” The fast mode page adds that organizations in the Evaluation tier can use it once they move to one of those tiers.

“Fast mode for Claude Opus 5 and Claude Opus 4.8 remains in research preview,” the release note says, and requests to those models still need the beta header. For those, the docs say to contact an account manager or join the waitlist.

“Fast mode for Claude Opus 5.5 is now available on Claude in Microsoft Foundry for deployments hosted on Azure.” The pricing page says fast mode is not available on Claude Platform on AWS or partner-operated cloud platforms, and the fast mode page says it is not available for Foundry deployments hosted on Anthropic.

Anthropic first launched fast mode in research preview for Opus 4.6 on 7 February 2026, according to its release notes. We wrote today about Microsoft’s move to sell Copilot without a Microsoft 365 base subscription, and about Nvidia’s RTX Spark laptops.

How Fast Mode Works

“Fast mode runs the same model with a faster inference configuration. There is no change to intelligence or capabilities,” the docs say. Developers opt in per request by setting speed to fast.

The docs say the “Speed benefits are focused on output tokens per second (OTPS), not time to first token (TTFT)”, and that the gain is most visible with streaming.

“Fast mode has a dedicated rate limit that is separate from standard Opus rate limits.” When that limit is exceeded, the API returns a 429 error with a retry-after header, and the SDK retries up to 2 times by default.

Fast mode is not available with the Batch API or with a Priority Tier commitment, the docs say. The response’s usage object reports which speed was used. The docs also warn that “Switching between fast and standard speed invalidates the prompt cache.” On 16 October we wrote about a Microsoft paper on Haiku’s cost edge over larger models.

The Structural Read

As we read it, the price list now has a speed axis as well as a model axis: the docs say fast mode “runs the same model with a faster inference configuration”, and they price it at a multiplier on standard rates across the full context window.

As we read it, the newest model got the cheapest fast tier: the docs list Opus 5.5 fast mode at $8 and $40, below the $10 and $50 listed for fast mode on Claude Opus 5 and Claude Opus 4.8, which stay in research preview.

As we read it, choosing fast mode is a per-request decision with costs beyond the rate card: the docs say switching speeds invalidates the prompt cache, that fast mode has its own rate limit, and that it is not available with the Batch API or a Priority Tier commitment.

Three Implications

DEVELOPERS ON THE CLAUDE API From 15 October 2026, Anthropic says Opus 5.5 fast mode needs no access request or beta header, with a default fast mode rate limit in the Start, Build and Scale tiers; the docs say requests set speed to fast to opt in.

TEAMS ON OTHER CLOUDS The pricing page says fast mode is not available on Claude Platform on AWS or partner-operated cloud platforms; for Opus 5.5 it is on Claude in Microsoft Foundry for deployments hosted on Azure.

FINANCE AND COST OWNERS The docs list fast mode at $8 and $40 per million tokens against $4 and $20 standard, with caching and data residency multipliers applied on top, and the usage object reports which speed each request used.

The Business Engineer Lens

This story maps onto the Business Engineer framework Tokenomics: The Economics of AI.

The framework says of the token: “It is simultaneously the unit of cognition the model produces, the unit of compute the data center serves, the unit of price the lab charges, and the unit of value the enterprise extracts”.

As we read it, fast mode adds speed to the unit of price: Anthropic’s docs list the same Opus 5.5 output token at $20 per million at standard speed and $40 in fast mode. The framework predates the announcement and does not discuss fast mode.

Listed output prices per million tokens: Opus 5.5 standard $20, Opus 5.5 fast mode $40, Opus 5 and Opus 4.8 fast mode $50, Fable 5.1 standard $50
Output prices per million tokens as listed in Anthropic’s Pricing and Fast mode docs on 16 October 2026. Input prices are $4, $8, $10 and $10 respectively.

What Is Not Established

The pages we read do not give the size of the default fast mode rate limits in each tier; they point developers to the Rate limits page in the Claude Console. They do not say how many customers use fast mode.

We read the Claude Platform release notes for 15 October and 22 September 2026, the fast mode page and the pricing page in full on 16 October. We did not test fast mode, and we did not contact Anthropic or Microsoft.

The Bottom Line

On 15 October 2026, Anthropic took fast mode for Claude Opus 5.5 out of research preview: no access request, no beta header, and a default fast mode rate limit in the Start, Build and Scale tiers, plus availability on Azure-hosted Foundry deployments.

The docs list fast mode at $8 and $40 per million input and output tokens, twice the standard $4 and $20 by our arithmetic, for up to 2.5x higher output tokens per second from the same model. Fast mode on Opus 5 and Opus 4.8 stays in research preview.

A note on sourcing. We read in full Anthropic’s Claude Platform release notes for 15 October, 22 September and 7 February 2026, and its Fast mode and Pricing documentation pages, on 16 October 2026; every quotation and figure comes from those pages.
