Nvidia was the more valuable of the two on 204 of the 209 trading days this year up to 30 October, by our arithmetic, until Apple passed it on Friday. Apple led on only five days: 27 to 30 July, and 30 October.
At Friday’s close Apple was worth $5.03 trillion and Nvidia $4.93 trillion, AppleInsider reported. Our count gives a gap of $97.8 billion.

A short Business Engineer explainer on power laws, where a few outcomes account for most of the value. It teaches the general idea only and does not discuss the companies in this story.
The key insight: By our arithmetic, Nvidia was worth more than Apple on 204 of the 209 trading days in 2026 up to 30 October, the day Apple closed $97.8 billion ahead.
How the Race Ran
On 2 January Nvidia was worth $4.59 trillion and Apple $4.00 trillion, by our arithmetic. The widest gap came on 14 May, when Nvidia’s $5.73 trillion stood $1.35 trillion above Apple’s $4.38 trillion.
Nvidia’s highest close of the year came on 6 October at $5.77 trillion. From there to 30 October it lost $833.9 billion, or 14.5%. Apple’s highest close came on 29 October at $5.09 trillion.
Between 2 January and 30 October Apple gained $1.03 trillion, or 25.6%, and Nvidia $342.7 billion, or 7.5%, by our arithmetic.

Month by Month
Nvidia was the larger company at the end of every month from January to September, by our arithmetic. Its month-end lead was narrowest at the end of July, at $349.8 billion, and widest at the end of April, at $865.9 billion.
At the end of September Nvidia was worth $5.50 trillion and Apple $4.86 trillion, a lead of $643.8 billion. In October Apple added $169.4 billion while Nvidia lost $572.1 billion, which closed that gap and put Apple $97.8 billion ahead by the end of the month.
The October swing, Apple up and Nvidia down, came as chip stocks fell: the broader chips index ended October with a monthly loss of more than 15%, Reuters reported.
What AppleInsider Said About the Lead
AppleInsider wrote that the top spot “has been going back and forth between Apple and Nvidia for some time now, as iPhone and Services demand go up against AI chip consumption”. Nvidia fell 4.2% on Friday, according to Reuters.
The Business Lever: A Narrow Lead
As we read the series, Apple’s lead on Friday is small next to the swings of the year: the $97.8 billion gap is about 7% of the $1.35 trillion by which Nvidia led in May. As we read the record, Apple has rarely been ahead of Nvidia in 2026.
Our daily values multiply each day’s closing price, from Yahoo Finance, by the shares outstanding on the cover of each company’s most recent SEC filing at that date. The count of days is ours.
The Structural Read
As we read the daily record, Apple’s Friday lead of $97.8 billion is about 7% of the $1.35 trillion by which Nvidia led on 14 May.
As we read the path, the change at the top came in October from both directions: Apple added $169.4 billion while Nvidia lost $572.1 billion, by our arithmetic.

The Business Engineer Lens
This story maps onto the Business Engineer framework The AI Supercycle.
The framework says the AI Supercycle has “a dual character that is simultaneously a bubble and a supercycle”.
As we read it, a year in which the most valuable company switched between a chipmaker and a device maker shows both sides of that dual character in market values. The framework predates these figures and does not discuss them.
