Amazon’s New Echo Dot Costs $100, Twice Its Pre-August Price

Amazon unveiled its new Alexa+ device lineup on 28 October 2026, and its new Echo Dot ships for $99.99. Wired reported the same day that the Echo Dot, “once the affordable, entry-level $50 smart speaker”, now starts at $100, and that this is “higher than the marked-up prices on existing Amazon devices from this summer, which the company blamed on the memory shortage.”

In plain words, the cheapest new Echo speaker now costs about twice what the previous model cost before August, by our arithmetic. Techmeme’s summary of a Bloomberg report by Chris Welch says Amazon raised smart speaker prices with this launch. The launch came a day after Business Insider reported an internal Amazon planning document that forecast a $612 million gross loss this year for its devices business, which we covered on 27 October.

Business Pill · Margin Squeeze

An evergreen Business Engineer explainer on a margin squeeze: what happens when input costs rise faster than prices. It explains the general idea only and does not discuss Amazon.

The key insight: As we read it, Amazon’s new lineup moves the entry price of the Echo line to $99.99, about twice the $50 the previous Echo Dot cost before 20 August, two months after price rises that an Amazon spokesperson tied to memory and storage costs.

Entry Echo Dot price in the US: $50 for the previous Echo Dot (5th generation) until 20 August 2026, $80 after Amazon’s August increase, and $99.99 for the new Echo Dot launched on 28 October 2026. Sources: Wired (August 2026 price list), Amazon (28 Oct 2026).
  • Echo Dot. Amazon says the new Echo Dot ships today for $99.99, and Kids versions with a year of Amazon Kids+ cost $109.99.
  • Echo Studio with Home Camera. It ships today for $249.99, Amazon says, while the standard Echo Studio stays available for $219.99.
  • Echo Show 16. A 16-inch smart display available for preorder from $499.99, or $569.99 with a Nanomatte screen, with $100 off for preorders, according to Amazon.
  • Echo Time and Alexa Photo Frame. The Echo Time bedside clock is available for $199.99, Amazon says. The Verge reported that the Alexa Photo Frame costs $199.99 for a black frame or $229 in birch or walnut.
  • Alexa+. Amazon says hundreds of millions of customers are using the new Alexa experiences, and that certain features require Alexa+, which is included with a Prime membership.

The Verge described the Echo Show 16 as “eye-wateringly expensive” and noted it costs double the price of the $250 Echo Show 11.

What Was Posted on X

Techmeme posted that Amazon unveils the $500 Echo Show 16, the $200 Echo Time alarm, and the $200+ Alexa Photo Frame, raises smart speaker prices, and previews Alexa Home Map, citing Chris Welch of Bloomberg.

Bloomberg posted that Amazon is going big on Alexa hardware in time for Apple’s HomeView release, planning a $500 Echo Show 16, a camera-equipped Echo Studio, a sleep-sensing bedside clock, a smart photo frame and a new Echo Dot.

How the Prices Moved Since August

Wired reported after the August increases that Amazon had raised prices by $20 to $100 on devices including the Echo, Eero and Fire Stick. It said Amazon declined to comment to Wired, but that an Amazon spokesperson told CNET the increases were due to rising prices in memory and storage components.

  • Echo Dot (5th generation): $80, up $30, according to Wired, which said the Echo Dot cost $50 as recently as 20 August.
  • Echo Spot (2nd generation): $110, up $30.
  • Echo Show 11: $250, up $30.
  • Echo Show 15: $350, up $50.
  • Echo Show 21: $500, up $100.

By our arithmetic, the new Echo Dot’s $99.99 is about twice the $50 the previous Echo Dot cost before 20 August, and $20 more than its price after the August increase. The new Dot is a new model, so this compares the entry price of the Echo line, not one product.

Connecting the Coverage

Our 27 October piece reported that the Amazon planning document, prepared in August, forecast a $612 million gross loss for the devices business against a target of a $438 million loss, and said rising memory costs were “putting pressure” on profitability. What’s new: the first launch after that report puts the entry Echo at $99.99.

The same pressure has shown up elsewhere this week. Nikkei Asia reported that PC makers including HP and Asus are moving some production back to China to fight component costs, which we covered on 28 October. ETNews reported that Samsung is cutting Galaxy A phone production as memory prices rise, as we reported on 27 October, and Canon said shortages of circuit boards tied to AI demand hit its production, as we reported on 28 October.

The Structural Read

As we read it, the launch prices sit above the August list: the new Echo Dot is $20 more than the previous model after its increase, by our arithmetic.

Wired reported that Panos Panay, Amazon’s senior vice president of Devices and Alexa, says devices need to be in premium shape as people have deeper conversations with Alexa+.

The Business Insider document we reported on 27 October named trade-offs among sales volumes, average selling prices and gross profit; Amazon’s launch posts do not discuss pricing strategy.

Wired, 28 October 2026

“That’s higher than the marked-up prices on existing Amazon devices from this summer, which the company blamed on the memory shortage.”

Three Implications

FOR ECHO BUYERS The cheapest new Echo speaker is $99.99, and the Echo Show 16 starts at $499.99, according to Amazon.

FOR AMAZON’S DEVICES BUSINESS Business Insider reported an internal forecast of a $612 million gross loss this year against a $438 million target.

FOR OTHER DEVICE MAKERS Nikkei Asia, ETNews and Canon have each reported component-cost or shortage pressure this week, as our earlier pieces cover.

The Business Engineer Lens

This story maps onto the Business Engineer framework The AI Memory Chokepoint.

The framework puts it as “Memory is becoming the new compute. HBM growth is outpacing accelerator demand, making memory the rate-limiting factor in the AI scaling equation.”

As we read it, consumer devices sit downstream of that constraint: an Amazon spokesperson tied the August Echo price rises to memory and storage costs, according to Wired. The framework was published in December 2025 and does not discuss Amazon’s devices.

What Is Not Established

Amazon’s launch posts do not mention memory costs or price increases. We could not read Bloomberg’s article beyond its headline and Techmeme’s summary, so we do not know which speakers it says rose or by how much. The memory link for the August increases comes from an Amazon spokesperson’s comment to CNET, as reported by Wired; the planning document comes from Business Insider. We did not contact Amazon.

The Bottom Line

Amazon’s new Echo Dot costs $99.99, about twice the $50 the previous model cost before 20 August, by our arithmetic. Wired says Amazon blamed this summer’s device price increases on the memory shortage, and Business Insider reported an internal forecast of a $612 million devices gross loss.
