Stripe’s Stablecoin Cards Aim for 100+ Countries in 2027

Stripe said on 15 October 2026 that it is working with Plasma to launch multi-currency stablecoin cards, and that it is expanding its stablecoin card infrastructure to more currencies and stablecoins. Stripe’s post lists the markets as available in 30+ countries today, with plans to expand to 100+ countries in 2027.

Plasma joins as a design partner, according to the post. Its chief executive, Paul Faecks, is quoted saying Plasma is moving to Stripe’s stablecoin card infrastructure.

Business Pill · SWITCHING COSTS

A one-minute explainer of switching costs: why it gets hard to leave a supplier once your systems depend on it. It teaches the general idea only and says nothing about any company in this story.

The key insight: As we read it, Stripe is selling the card rail rather than the card: Stern is quoted saying the work gives businesses the infrastructure to offer cards across currencies and markets without building it themselves.

What Stripe Is Adding

Stripe’s post lists what the expanded capabilities will support. The fiat currencies are USD, BRL, EUR, MXN and COP. The stablecoins are USDC, OUSD and eligible GENIUS-compliant stablecoins.

The post gives an example: someone holding euros will be able to spend directly in euros without converting through dollars first. Businesses operating across markets can issue cards denominated in currencies that match their spending needs, which Stripe says helps reduce unnecessary FX costs.

Stripe calls this the first step toward a broader multi-currency experience. It says it is working toward letting cardholders spend across multiple balances, with the appropriate currency selected automatically at the point of purchase.

What Was Posted on X

Stripe Crypto, Stripe’s crypto account, posted the announcement on 15 October 2026 at 13:01 UTC, linking the X Article this piece is built on.

Plasma posted two minutes later, calling the co-development of multi-currency cards the first step in its partnership with Stripe.

Patrick Collison quote-posted Stripe Crypto’s announcement, writing that stablecoin-backed cards make global balances instantly usable at 100M+ businesses. That figure is his own description; the posts do not break it down.

What Plasma Brings

Stripe’s post describes Plasma as building the financial account for people whose lives span countries, assets and businesses, starting with everyday spending. It says Plasma supports moving money in and out of accounts across multiple currencies, including USD, EUR, GBP and BRL.

As a design partner, the post says, Plasma will work with Stripe to make the balances customers hold in their accounts spendable through multi-currency cards.

Plasma’s own post on X called the co-development of multi-currency cards “the first step in realizing this vision.”

What the Executives Said

Faecks is quoted in Stripe’s post: “We’re building Plasma for people whose lives and finances span countries.” He adds that the ambition is to “spend like a local, anywhere.”

Henri Stern, whom the post names as Stripe’s head of crypto and stablecoins and the co-founder and CEO of Privy, is quoted saying the work gives “businesses the infrastructure to offer cards across currencies and markets without having to build it themselves.”

Stripe’s Patrick Collison wrote on X that stablecoin-backed cards make global balances instantly usable at 100M+ businesses, and that Stripe is looking forward to working with Plasma.

A Payment Layer Week

Stripe’s post does not mention AI agents. It lands in a week when we covered two other payment layers: x402 payments on Base, and Google’s Universal Cart, which checks out with Google Pay through the Universal Commerce Protocol.

As we read it, all three are offers to other companies to plug into a payment rail rather than build one, which is how Stern describes Stripe’s card work.

The Structural Read

As we read it, the currency list is the product change: Stripe says the expanded cards will support USD, BRL, EUR, MXN and COP, so a euro balance can be spent in euros without converting through dollars first.

As we read it, Plasma is the first tenant of that rail: Faecks is quoted saying Plasma is moving to Stripe’s stablecoin card infrastructure, and Stripe names Plasma as its design partner.

As we read it, the footprint is the bet: Stripe’s post lists the cards as available in 30+ countries today, with plans to expand to 100+ countries in 2027.

Henri Stern, Stripe, quoted in Stripe’s 15 October 2026 post

“Stablecoins make it possible to hold and move money globally.”

Three Implications

CARDHOLDERS Stripe gives the example of someone holding euros spending directly in euros without converting through dollars first.

BUSINESSES Stripe says businesses operating across markets can issue cards denominated in currencies that match their spending needs, helping reduce unnecessary FX costs.

NEXT STEP Stripe says it is working toward letting cardholders spend across multiple balances, with the appropriate currency selected automatically at the point of purchase.

The Business Engineer Lens

This story maps onto the Business Engineer framework Enterprise AI: From Software to Substrate.

The analysis puts it in one line: “Enterprise vendors don’t sell software anymore—they sell irreversibility. The product is the interconnection.”

As we read it, Stripe’s stablecoin card infrastructure is offered as that kind of interconnection: Stern is quoted saying businesses can offer the cards without having to build the infrastructure themselves. The framework does not discuss Stripe or stablecoins.

Currencies and stablecoins as listed in Stripe’s 15 October 2026 post; “eligible GENIUS-compliant stablecoins” is Stripe’s wording.

What Is Not Established

The posts we read do not give a launch date for Plasma’s multi-currency cards, a card network, pricing for businesses, or the countries in the 30+ and 100+ figures.

Collison’s 100M+ figure is his own description of where stablecoin-backed cards can be used; the posts do not break it down.

A note on sourcing. We read Stripe’s 15 October 2026 X Article on its work with Plasma in full, along with the posts on X that day by Stripe Crypto, Plasma and Patrick Collison; every currency, figure and quotation comes from them. Collison’s post repeats a word, so we paraphrase it rather than quote it. The x402 and Universal Cart context comes from our own earlier reporting. We did not use other outlets’ reports.
