MediaTek expects its first AI accelerator to bring in $2.5 billion of revenue in the fourth quarter. Chief executive Rick Tsai said on the company’s 30 October earnings call that MediaTek is “confident of delivering 2.5 billion US dollars revenue in the fourth quarter”, after initial shipments began in September.
MediaTek guided fourth-quarter revenue to NT$210.1 billion to NT$221.8 billion at a forecast exchange rate of 31.7 NT dollars to the US dollar. By our arithmetic, the $2.5 billion is about NT$79.3 billion at that rate, or roughly 36% to 38% of the guided quarter.
Business Pill · Concentration
A short explainer on customer concentration. It is a general explainer and is not about this story.
The key insight: MediaTek said it is confident of $2.5 billion of AI accelerator revenue in the fourth quarter from its first accelerator, which by our arithmetic is about 36% to 38% of the NT$210.1 billion to NT$221.8 billion it guided for the quarter.
The Accelerator Ramp
Tsai said demand for the first AI accelerator “remains very strong”. For 2027, he said MediaTek expects the program to reach “the high end of our revenue target range of approximately US$16 billion”, which he described as “around 20% of the total AI accelerator ASIC market”.
By our arithmetic, $16 billion is about 1.6 times the $10 billion that four quarters at the fourth-quarter rate would add up to. MediaTek did not name the customer for the chip on the call.
A second AI accelerator is “on track for high-volume production in the first quarter of 2028”, Tsai said.

The Quarter Behind the Guidance
MediaTek reported third-quarter revenue of NT$168,058 million, up 18.3% from a year earlier, with a gross margin of 46.3%, according to its 30 October results release. It guided fourth-quarter revenue up 25% to 32% sequentially and 40% to 48% year over year, with gross margin at 45%, plus or minus 1.5 percentage points.
Chief financial officer David Ku said on the call that data-center gross margin is “currently still below the corporate average”, and that MediaTek also made “some price adjustment in order to reflect about the cost increase for the whole supply chain”.
The Business Lever: Custom Silicon Beside the GPU
Tsai also said MediaTek completed an overseas convertible bond offering of $3.9 billion “with participation from NVIDIA and Alphabet”. As we read it, the accelerator ramp moves a company known for phone chips into the custom-ASIC market that sits alongside GPUs in AI data centers.

The Structural Read
As we read the call, the guidance rests on one program: the first AI accelerator, whose initial shipments began in September, according to Tsai.
As we read the CFO’s answer, the ramp lowers the blended gross margin guide, because data-center gross margin is still below the corporate average, by his account.
As we read it, the 2027 target implies growth beyond the fourth-quarter run rate: the high end of about $16 billion is roughly 1.6 times four quarters at $2.5 billion, by our arithmetic.

Three Implications
FOR MEDIATEK The company guided fourth-quarter revenue up 25% to 32% sequentially and gross margin at 45%, plus or minus 1.5 percentage points, according to the call.
FOR THE AI ASIC MARKET Tsai described the roughly $16 billion 2027 target as around 20% of the total AI accelerator ASIC market.
FOR THE SUPPLY CHAIN MediaTek’s CFO said the company made some price adjustment to reflect the cost increase across the whole supply chain.
The Business Engineer Lens
This story maps onto the Business Engineer framework The AI Supercycle.
The framework puts it this way: “Three competitive categories within one layer: generalist substrate (NVIDIA), hyperscaler custom (TPU, Trainium, MTIA), merchant custom challengers (Cerebras, Groq, SambaNova).”
As we read it, MediaTek’s accelerator program sits in the custom-silicon category the framework describes, as a designer building a chip for a single unnamed customer. The framework does not discuss MediaTek.

What Is Not Established
MediaTek did not name the accelerator customer on the call or in the release. The 36% to 38% share is our arithmetic from MediaTek’s own guidance and forecast exchange rate; a BofA analyst on the call put the figure at about 30%. The results and guidance were published on 30 October; this piece follows a 2 November MarketScreener report.
The Bottom Line
MediaTek said it is confident of $2.5 billion of AI accelerator revenue in the fourth quarter, about 36% to 38% of its guided revenue by our arithmetic, and is aiming for the high end of a roughly $16 billion target for the program in 2027.
