What Happened

Intel’s Q2 2026 earnings, released this week, show its Foundry segment posted an operating loss of $2.1 billion on revenue of $5.8 billion — an operating margin of −36.2%. That is a significant improvement from Q2 2025, when the same segment lost $3.2 billion at a −71.7% operating margin. The loss is still very large. A −36% margin is nowhere near breakeven. But the direction of travel has changed, and in Intel’s turnaround calculus, direction is currently the only number that counts.

Intel reported that its 18A process node has ramped into production and that 18A-P is in risk production. The company reaffirmed its commitment to 14A high-volume manufacturing by 2028. That 2028 target is a multi-year, technically unproven bet: high-volume external customer adoption of 14A has not been demonstrated, and the gap between “ramped” and “competitive with TSMC at volume” remains wide and incompletely mapped.
