SK Hynix Fell 2x Seoul’s Index as Hong Kong Rose 1.5%

SK Hynix closed down 7.08% in Seoul on 30 October 2026, about 2.0 times the KOSPI’s 3.48% fall by our arithmetic, while Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index closed up 1.46%, according to Yahoo Finance daily market data. The Korea Times reported that the “KOSPI falls 3.48% as US tech earnings fuel AI investment concerns”.

Seoul, Tokyo and Taipei closed lower while Hong Kong closed higher, and our earlier piece on Asia’s intraday losses now has its closing numbers.

Business Pill · Concentration

A short explainer of concentration: what happens when a few holdings make up a large share of a whole. It teaches the general idea only and says nothing about this story.

The key insight: At the 30 October close, SK Hynix fell 7.08%, about 2.0 times the KOSPI’s 3.48% decline by our arithmetic, while Hong Kong’s Hang Seng rose 1.46% and SMIC fell 4.40% inside it, according to Yahoo Finance data.

Where the Selling Landed

At the close, the KOSPI fell 3.48%, Taiwan’s TAIEX 2.49% and Japan’s Nikkei 225 2.12%, according to Yahoo Finance data. Businesskorea reported the KOSPI “Plunges 3.5%, Barely Holding 5,700 Level”, and Tokenpost reported Taiwan stocks fell 2.5%.

Hong Kong went the other way. The Hang Seng closed up 1.46%, and Alibaba’s Hong Kong shares rose 0.99%. Mainland China’s Shanghai Composite fell 1.44%.

What Was Posted on X

Reuters posted its global markets story on 30 October: stocks slumped and bonds leapt as AI giants’ spending spooked investors.

The Chip Names Against Their Home Markets

In Tokyo, chip-testing maker Advantest fell 5.86%, about 2.8 times the Nikkei’s fall, and Tokyo Electron fell 5.19%, about 2.4 times, by our arithmetic.

Not every large chipmaker fell more than its market. TSMC fell 1.86%, about 0.75 times the TAIEX’s 2.49% decline, and Samsung Electronics fell 3.02%, about 0.87 times the KOSPI’s fall, by our arithmetic.

In Hong Kong, chipmaker SMIC fell 4.40% while the Hang Seng rose 1.46%, a gap of 5.86 percentage points by our arithmetic. In Shanghai, AI chip designer Cambricon fell 3.61%.

In Europe, ASML was down 5.56% at 13:25 UTC against a 0.33% fall in the STOXX Europe 600, about 17 times by our arithmetic, with European markets still trading.

Off the Lows

The closes were better than the worst of the day. The KOSPI’s session low was 5.70% below the previous close, so by the close it had recovered about 39% of that intraday drop, by our arithmetic. SK Hynix’s session low was 9.50% below its previous close, and Advantest’s 9.61%.

Two sessions earlier, on 28 October, we reported that SK Hynix jumped 11% as the KOSPI closed above 6,000, the day of its record third-quarter results. The KOSPI closed at 5,730.74 on 30 October, according to Yahoo Finance data.

The Backdrop

The same day, Reuters reported at 12:04 UTC a “Tanker in Strait of Hormuz hit by limpet mines, security sources say”, and The Wall Street Journal reported at 07:55 UTC “Oil Prices Rise After Hormuz Tanker Attack”. We do not quote an oil price in this piece.

Our coverage this week has tracked where AI hardware is made and where it lands: the US holds 72% of the world’s AI chip compute by Epoch AI’s count, Taiwan’s economy grew 14.36% in the third quarter, and Kioxia matched SK hynix’s 80% margin. In the US, the Magnificent 7 are $3.4 trillion below their highs.

The Structural Read

As we read the closing data, the heaviest falls on 30 October were in individual AI chip stocks rather than in whole markets: SK Hynix, Advantest and Tokyo Electron each fell more than twice their home index, by our arithmetic.

As we read the same data, TSMC and Samsung Electronics fell less than their home indexes, so the largest chipmakers did not lead the decline in Taipei or Seoul.

As we read the session lows, the KOSPI recovered about 39% of its intraday drop by the close, by our arithmetic, so the intraday figures in our earlier piece overstate the closing damage.

Three Implications

FOR SEOUL SK Hynix fell about 2.0 times the KOSPI on 30 October, two sessions after we reported it jumped 11% as the KOSPI closed above 6,000.

FOR TOKYO Advantest and Tokyo Electron fell about 2.8 and 2.4 times the Nikkei’s 2.12% decline, by our arithmetic.

FOR HONG KONG The Hang Seng closed up 1.46% while SMIC fell 4.40%, a gap of 5.86 percentage points by our arithmetic.

The Business Engineer Lens

This story maps onto the Business Engineer framework The AI Memory Chokepoint.

The framework says “Memory is becoming the new compute.”

As we read it, SK Hynix, a memory maker, fell the most of the chip names in our comparison on 30 October. The framework was published in December 2025 and does not discuss this selloff.

What Is Not Established

The figures are Yahoo Finance daily bars as retrieved around 13:45 UTC on 30 October; the Asian figures are closes, while the European figures are intraday readings at 13:25 UTC, not closes. The market data does not say why investors sold, and this piece does not attribute the moves to any single cause. We could not verify an oil price level for the day.

This week’s issue: the AI build is not short of demand for its parts. It is short of cheap money, and its end revenue rests on a narrow base of large, often venture-funded buyers.
