The structural reality is more nuanced. Google’s dominance is built on a specific paradigm: query-matched advertising against a ranked list of web pages. Perplexity does not attack this paradigm. It sidesteps it entirely. Instead of showing you links to pages that might contain your answer, Perplexity reads those pages for you and synthesizes a direct response with citations. The user never needs to click a link, never needs to scan a page, never needs to evaluate which of ten results is most relevant.

First principles check: What does a user actually want from search? Not links. Not ads. Not a list of possibilities. They want an answer. Google’s entire business model depends on the gap between query and answer being filled with advertising. Perplexity eliminates that gap.
