Google Launches AI Incubator for Ex-Employees — Cannot Keep Talent, Now Funds the Diaspora

Google can’t stop its best people from leaving — so now it’s funding them after they go. A 12-week AI incubator for Xooglers: $350K cloud credits + $100K cash, equity-free. The company that lost 7 of 8 Transformer authors is now incubating the diaspora.

The Structural Read

This came the same week Shazeer left for OpenAI and Jumper left for Anthropic. Google can’t retain researchers. The incubator is the next-best play: keep departing talent on Google Cloud. $350K in credits costs Google almost nothing (cloud credits are margin) and buys ecosystem lock-in.

Equity-free is the smart move — no conflict with VCs, pure goodwill + infrastructure dependency. When your alumni found six companies that compete with you, become their infrastructure provider.

Bottom line: The Xoogler incubator isn’t a growth program — it’s damage control for the most expensive talent exodus in corporate history. If you can’t retain the talent, fund the diaspora.
