Korea Nears $1 Trillion of Exports as AI Chips Lift GDP 1%

South Korea’s economy grew 1.0% in the third quarter of 2026 from the previous three months, on booming chip exports, according to advance Bank of Korea estimates published on 27 October Korean time (26 October UTC), Reuters reported. That was above the 0.7% median of a Reuters poll of economists.

Amid the global boom in AI investment, South Korea’s exports topped $800 billion in January to September and are on track to exceed $1 trillion this year, Reuters reported, which would make it the fourth country to reach that mark after the US, China and Germany.

Business Pill · FINANCIAL CONDITIONS

A short explainer on financial conditions: several prices of money pulling at once. It teaches the general idea only and says nothing about South Korea or the figures in this piece.

The key insight: As we read it, the report shows how concentrated the growth was: exports rose 2.3% and facilities investment 4.1% on chips and chipmaking equipment, while private consumption fell 0.2%, according to the Bank of Korea figures Reuters reported.

What the Bank of Korea Reported

Real gross domestic product rose 1.0% in the July-September period, after 0.6% in the second quarter, the Bank of Korea’s advance estimate shows, as reported by Reuters and The Korea Times. On a year-on-year basis, GDP grew 3.4%, after 3.7% in the quarter before, against economists’ expectations of 3.0%, Reuters reported.

The Korea Times reported that the 1% growth exceeded the Bank of Korea’s own projection of 0.3% for the quarter, and that quarterly growth had rebounded from a 0.1% contraction in the fourth quarter of 2025 to 1.8% in the first quarter of 2026.

The Policy Backdrop

The Bank of Korea kept interest rates unchanged last week, after back-to-back hikes in July and September, but kept a hawkish stance by upgrading its growth forecasts, Reuters reported. The Korea Times put the central bank’s forecast for 2026 at 3.3%, released in August.

Connecting the Coverage

Earlier this month we reported that Taiwan’s September exports hit a record $87.2B, up 60.9%. On 26 October we covered how SK Hynix weighs up to 60 trillion won more for shareholders, and how China’s AI index lost $480B as Goldman put AI at 42% of the market.

The Structural Read

As we read it, the quarter was investment and exports, not households: Reuters says private consumption fell for the first time in nearly four years while facilities investment jumped on semiconductor manufacturing equipment.

As we read it, the export total is the wider frame: Reuters says exports topped $800 billion in nine months and are on track to exceed $1 trillion, which would make South Korea the fourth country to reach that mark.

As we read it, the surprise was large against both benchmarks: the 1.0% figure was above the 0.7% Reuters poll median and, The Korea Times reported, the central bank’s own 0.3% projection for the quarter.

Three Implications

FOR MONETARY POLICY Reuters says the Bank of Korea held rates last week after back-to-back hikes in July and September and upgraded its growth forecasts.

FOR CHIPMAKING EQUIPMENT The Korea Times says facilities investment rose 4.1% on machinery, including semiconductor manufacturing equipment, and imports of that equipment also rose.

FOR HOUSEHOLD DEMAND Reuters says private consumption fell 0.2% in the quarter, the first decline in nearly four years.

The Business Engineer Lens

This story maps onto the Business Engineer framework The AI Memory Chokepoint.

The framework opens: “The AI race has a new bottleneck, and it’s not what most observers expect.”

As we read it, a quarter in which exports and facilities investment both rose on semiconductors, as Reuters and The Korea Times reported, shows that demand in a country’s accounts. The framework was published in December 2025 and does not discuss these GDP figures.

What Is Not Established

The reports do not give the Bank of Korea’s own split of growth between semiconductors and other goods, and this is an advance estimate that the central bank revises. The $1 trillion export figure is Reuters’ description of the current pace, not an official forecast. We read the Bank of Korea figures as reported by Reuters and The Korea Times, not from the central bank’s own release.

This week’s issue: the AI build is not short of demand for its parts. It is short of cheap money, and its end revenue rests on a narrow base of large, often venture-funded buyers.
