Per The Information’s February 2026 report, AWS CEO Matt Garman created a dedicated agent-focused AI group in March 2025—the most significant structural change to AWS’s AI organization since Bedrock launched in 2023.

Before vs. After

Before March 2025: Swami Sivasubramanian oversaw a unified AI portfolio—Bedrock, SageMaker, and emerging AI products all under one roof. The challenge was clear: agent opportunities were buried in a mature product portfolio with too many competing priorities.

After March 2025: AWS split into specialized divisions. Sivasubramanian now leads a dedicated Agent Group (Kiro, AgentCore, Quick Suite, Transform). Dave Brown took Compute + ML (Bedrock Infrastructure, SageMaker ML Suite). Mai-Lan Bukovec handles Data Products.

The Leadership Turnover

The reorganization triggered significant executive departures. Vasi Philomin (Bedrock AI services lead) left in summer 2025. Baskar Sridharan (SageMaker) departed in September after roughly one year. Dilip Kumar (Quick Suite, Just Walk Out) also exited.

New agent-focused talent filled the gaps: David Richardson returned from Stripe to lead AgentCore. Jigar Thakkar arrived from Microsoft Teams to run Quick Suite.

The Strategic Signal

AWS split mature AI products to create a dedicated agent-focused group—signaling agents are the “next multi-billion-dollar business worth organizational disruption. The departures prove this transformation is happening faster than clean execution allows.
