When most business schools teach lean methodology, they point to Toyota. When most venture capitalists fund the future of manufacturing, they point to Tesla. But here’s the uncomfortable truth neither side wants to admit: both companies practice lean methodology — and they’re doing it in ways that are fundamentally incompatible with each other’s survival.

Toyota’s just-in-time inventory model became globally famous and globally vulnerable simultaneously when COVID-19 supply chain disruptions exposed its fragility. The business model assumption — that suppliers are reliable and logistics are predictable — cracked under pressure. Toyota lost production weeks across global plants.

Toyota’s lean model explicitly values human judgment. The andon cord — allowing any worker to stop the production line — is a cultural cornerstone.
