Revenue came in at $90.0 billion, up 18% year over year and ahead of the roughly $87.6 billion analyst consensus. GAAP diluted EPS reached $4.81, up 32%, on net income of $35.8 billion, up 31%. Azure grew 43% in constant currency — accelerating from 40% the prior quarter, beating the roughly 40% consensus, and producing an Azure annual revenue figure that crossed $100 billion for the first time, up 41%. Microsoft guided for approximately 45% Azure growth in the September quarter. Shares rose in extended-hours trading, initially around 3% and more following the earnings call — an initial reaction in after-hours conditions, not a settled market verdict.
The figure the market tracked most closely was capital expenditure. Microsoft spent approximately $190 billion on capex in fiscal 2026 — a number that includes roughly $25 billion attributable to higher component prices — and guided fiscal 2027 capex to approximately $255–260 billion. That is a roughly 35% increase on a comparison that is approximate and on a differing basis; it is not a clean fiscal-year-over-fiscal-year figure. What it is, unambiguously, is a compounding commitment: over time, a guide of that magnitude will pressure Microsoft’s own free cash flow and margins, by the same mechanism that took Meta’s free cash flow to $784 million this quarter — the spend outpacing the visible return window.
The difference — and the reason the initial after-hours reaction was positive rather than punitive — is that Azure’s 43% acceleration arrived in the same report as the spend. That simultaneity is the entire argument. It does not make the capex guide risk-free; Azure’s growth rate will moderate over time as the revenue base compounds past $100 billion annually. But it does make the spend legible, and legibility is what the AI infrastructure trade is currently pricing above almost everything else.
The key insight: Azure’s 43% acceleration did not neutralize the capex guide’s long-run FCF risk — it made the risk legible. The market will tolerate a $255–260 billion annual commitment when cloud revenue growth visibly tracks it in the same quarter. The moment that simultaneity breaks, the same guide becomes a liability. That is the conditional the AI infrastructure trade is now pricing, not a blanket endorsement of infinite spend.

The Structural Read

Microsoft’s stronger cloud revenue base means its FCF compression timeline is longer than Meta’s — but the direction is the same.
