The AI Visibility Playbook

As I’ve explained in Visibility in the Agentic Web, the core assumptions that will make up the new web will be pretty different, and that cascades back into a bunch of practical implications for whoever does business online.

This new playbook is about understanding how AI systems select, synthesize, and cite sources.

These tactics work today, while we’re still in the hybrid phase where AI search generates real traffic.

Use them wisely to build your bridge to tomorrow.

  • Build definitive guides that exhaust a topic so that other pages are redundant.
  • Create tools (calculators, diagnostics, data generators) that produce citable outputs.
  • Maintain historical datasets and archives so you become a reference infrastructure.

Write in Natural Question–Answer Patterns

  • Align content to how users ask questions in AI: “what is…”, “how do I…”, “why does…”, “difference between…”
  • Include multiple phrasings for the same question (cancel subscription vs unsubscribe).
  • Anticipate and answer follow-up questions in the same piece.
  • Layer beginner and advanced explanations to capture both ends of the knowledge spectrum.

Freshness as a Ranking Signal

  • Display publication and last-updated dates prominently (with schema markup).
  • Refresh cornerstone content every 30–60 days with new data, examples, links, and copy.
  • Publish rapid responses to news and updates (24–48 hour window).
  • Use visible “Latest Updates” changelogs to signal active maintenance.

Build Maximum Citation-Worthiness

  • Attach real author names, credentials, institutional affiliations, and contact pages.
  • Heavily cite primary sources: academic papers, regulatory filings, official reports.
  • Show your methodology (data sources, sampling approach, biases, margin of error).
  • Use precise, verifiable claims (“47% reduction in load time across 1,000 runs”).

Deliver Unique Value, LLMs Cannot Scrape

  • Offer proprietary tools, calculators, templates, assessments, and real case studies requiring user interaction.
  • Conduct exclusive CEO/founder interviews, insider data drops, and community-sourced insights.
  • Interlink content heavily across related topics — creating “content webs” that demonstrate deep topical authority.

Use Today’s Window to Build Tomorrow’s Business Model

  • We are in a hybrid phase where AI models still cite and send real traffic — use it as a bridge.
  • Monetise current visibility to build agent-native distribution (APIs, data endpoints, micro-payments, token-gated access).

Design for Three Audiences Simultaneously

Winning requires delivering for all three — without sacrificing the first two to chase the third.

Humans — the actual customer and decision-maker.

Today’s LLMs — your current distribution channel.

Tomorrow’s agents — fully autonomous entities consuming data directly via APIs.
