Step 2: Map Tribal Capacity to Strategic Priorities

After completing the tribal census, map your tribe capacity to your strategic priorities. Find the gaps between what you need and what you have.

Step 2 - Map Tribal Capacity to Strategic Priorities

The Mapping Exercise

For each strategic priority, ask: “What tribes does this require?”

Strategic Priority Explorer Need Automator Need Validator Need Gap?
New Market Entry High Medium Low Critical gap if Explorer-light
Cost Optimization Low High Medium Aligned if Automator-strong
Regulatory Compliance Low Medium High Watch – most orgs under-invest here
Customer Experience High High Medium Aligned if balanced

The Gap Analysis

Gaps reveal where your tribal mix doesn’t match your strategic ambitions.

Two choices when gaps appear:

  1. Fix the gap – rebalance tribal capacity
  2. Adjust the priority – acknowledge what’s realistic

Legend

  • H = High need – This tribe is critical for success
  • M = Medium need – This tribe supports success
  • L = Low need – This tribe is less relevant

Gaps reveal misalignment. Alignment reveals opportunity.
