Chrome Gets Gemini Panel with Auto Browse: Google’s Agentic Web Play

On January 28, 2026, Google announced it’s bringing more Gemini AI features to Chrome, including a new design with a persistent Gemini panel and “Auto browse”—agentic features that let users ask Gemini to perform actions across the web.

New Chrome Features

  • Gemini Panel: New Chrome design with a panel on the right side keeping Gemini available while browsing
  • Auto Browse: Agentic features allowing users to ask Gemini to perform actions like:
    • Order groceries
    • Research hotels and flights across multiple dates
    • Execute multi-step web tasks

Availability

Auto browse is available to AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers in the U.S.

The Agentic Commerce Angle

This is Google’s answer to OpenAI’s Agentic Commerce Protocol. By embedding AI agents directly in Chrome—the world’s dominant browser—Google positions itself to capture AI-mediated transactions at the browser level.

The protocol war continues: Google’s UCP vs. OpenAI’s ACP, and now browser-native agents vs. chat-based agents.
