The Principle
Resolution fluency isn’t innate—it’s developed through deliberate practice. Like any skill, it requires conscious effort at first, but becomes automatic with repetition. Here are four practices that build it.
The Four Building Practices
1. Deliberate Zooming
Consciously shift altitude during work
How to Practice:
- When deep in tactical work, pause and ask: “What does this look like at 10× altitude?”
- When in strategic discussions, ask: “What does this mean at ground level?”
This builds the mental muscle for resolution shifts.
2. Resolution Labeling
Explicitly name which level you’re at
How to Practice:
- In meetings and documents, explicitly label your resolution: “Speaking strategically…” / “At the operational level…” / “Tactically speaking…”
This builds awareness in you and helps others follow.
3. Translation Exercises
Practice converting between resolutions
How to Practice:
- Take any insight and translate it through all four resolutions
- Start with a strategic observation → Work down to tactical implications
- Or reverse it: Start with a tactical problem → Work up to strategic causes
This is the core translation muscle.
4. Resolution Diversity
Expose yourself to all four levels
How to Practice:
- If you’re tactical, spend time with strategists
- If you’re strategic, spend time doing detailed execution
- Shadow people at different levels and ask how they see problems
The Building Principle
Resolution fluency is developed, not downloaded. Start with one practice, make it habitual, then add another. Within months, shifting between resolutions becomes automatic—the way it works for master integrators.
